SAUT BLOOD DONATION & CANCER SUPPORT CAMPAIGN 2023-2025 (Finished)

Location: St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), Mwanza
Partners: Bugando Medical Centre – Damu Salama Department, SAUT Administration, SAUT Student Government Organization (SAUTSO)

Project Overview
The SAUT Blood Donation & Cancer Support Campaign is a three-year life-saving initiative led by African Child Comforters Organization (ACCO) at St. Augustine University of Tanzania. Conducted from 2023 to 2025, the campaign was designed to mobilize university students to donate blood and support patients in critical need, particularly mothers, children, and cancer patients at Bugando Medical Centre.

This initiative went beyond blood donation drives. It became a movement rooted in solidarity, compassion, and collective responsibility. ACCO led large-scale mobilization efforts across campus, transforming SAUT into a hub of life-saving action.
The campaign was implemented in close collaboration with Bugando Medical Centre’s Damu Salama Department, SAUT administration, and the Student Government Organization (SAUTSO), with strong institutional support including the Assistant Public Relations Officer and the Dean of Students.

Season One began with a visit to the Children’s Cancer Ward at Bugando Hospital,a moment that anchored the campaign in empathy and human connection. Subsequent seasons focused on structured campus-wide blood donation mobilization.
After three consecutive years of impact, ACCO received a Certificate of Appreciation from Bugando Medical Centre – Damu Salama Sector, recognizing its contribution to saving lives.

Our Focus
-Promoting voluntary blood donation among youth
-Supporting children battling cancer
-Preventing maternal and child deaths caused by blood shortages
-Encouraging a culture of Ubuntu and civic responsibility
-Strengthening collaboration between universities and health institutions

How We Made It Happen
ACCO led the mobilization strategy through:
1. Class-to-Class Engagement
Direct advocacy in lecture halls to educate students about the importance of blood donation.
2. Hostel Outreach
Visiting student residences to encourage participation and answer fears or misconceptions.
3. Digital Mobilization
Strategic use of WhatsApp groups and social media campaigns to create awareness and momentum.
4. Institutional Collaboration
Working closely with Ibrahim Rugaimkamu (Recruitment Officer, Damu Salama Department) and university leadership to ensure smooth coordination.

Impact in Numbers
Over three years, the campaign achieved measurable, life-saving results:
Season One: 165 donors
Season Two: 192 donors
Season Three: 213 donors
Season Four: 227 donors
Total Impact: 797 voluntary blood donors

These numbers represent hundreds of patients, mothers, children, and critically ill individuals who received a second chance at life.

Challenges & How We Overcame Them
1. Fear and Misconceptions About Blood Donation
Many students initially feared pain, weakness, or health risks.
Our Response:
We conducted awareness sessions explaining the safety of blood donation, invited health professionals to clarify concerns, and shared real stories from Bugando Hospital.
2. Low Initial Turnout
At the beginning, participation was modest.
Our Response:
We intensified mobilization through face-to-face engagement and personalized outreach rather than relying only on posters or announcements.
3. Sustainability of Momentum
Maintaining enthusiasm for three consecutive years required consistency.
Our Response:
We created seasonal themes, built partnerships with student leaders, and continuously used WhatsApp campaigns to keep the energy alive.

Conclusion
The SAUT Blood Donation & Cancer Support Campaign stands as one of ACCO’s most impactful youth-led health initiatives. For three consecutive years, we demonstrated that organized student action can directly save lives.
This project reflects ACCO’s belief that advocacy must translate into action and that young people, when mobilized effectively, can become powerful agents of change.
